July 2007 : Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control in Turkey, India and China – BAT for Chinese textile and leather industry
CAI managing director Gerhard Weihs is supporting Adelphi Research in conducting surveys on BAT in the Chinese textile and leather industry within the framework of the Research Project ‘Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control in Turkey, India and China’
The German Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt) has commissioned Adelphi Consult to carry out a research project on standards for pollution prevention and control in the textile and leather industry. The European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau (EIPPCB) catalyses exchange of technical information on technical standards in various sectors. As a result of the ongoing dialogue Best Available Techniques (BATs) have been defined for a number of sectors and are updated regularly. The BAT as such are described in the so-called Best Available Techniques Reference Documents (BREFs). Germany supports the BREFs as an approach to prevent pollution, save the environment and contribute to the harmonization of standards. The research project conducted by Adelphi Consult explores the potential of the BREFs to enhance pollution prevention beyond the EU in the textile and leather industries in China, India and Turkey. Within these sectors current initiatives which have an impact on the application of technical standards for pollution prevention will be analysed. Above that, industries' interests in standards of pollution prevention as well as national administrative and judicial frameworks will be explored. The Chinese part of the research project is carried out by the Beijing office of CAI managing member Weihs Consult.
