Second workshop and company visits

This 3 day workshop - held from February 28 to March 6, 2007 - expanded upon the work done in the initial workshop in September. The companies have had 4 months in which to assemble their green teams and start gathering the main baseline assessment information. This workshop afforded the opportunity for the participants to outline a number of the issues and barriers that they have encountered to date. This was done during the first morning and provided also the opportunity for the participants to learn from each others recent experiences. The main issues highlighted were:

  • Lack of thorough understanding of CP amongst the green team members
  • Insufficient time for those assigned the main information gathering tasks to fulfil their responsibilities
  • Lack of detailed on site information with regard to resource use and waste generation, especially on the larger sites
  • Issues with the generation of process flow diagrams and the subsequent creation of accurate material flow balances
  • Lack of understating of resource efficiency in general

Many of these issues had been communicated to the European experts through their Mongolian counterparts and so the workshop was designed to further elaborate on the main tenets of initial CP assessments i.e. resource flow analysis, process flow diagrams, indicator generation and the use of benchmarks. Energy management and waste analysis were also discussed but not in the detail of afore mentioned topics.

Second round of company vists

The second series of company visits was carried out by the Mongolian expert team after the workshop. During several visits the companies developed the data basis for the CP programme. The companies documented the work in their CP assessment reports. The first 4 chapters were finalized and the data were included in the excel spread sheets. As reports were translated into English and sent to the project management for review. This work was completed successfully, now the consultants have the opportunity to develop CP options for improvements at many levels.

Up to Mach 2007 the project management has received already first CP reports from Mongolia.
