CPSU Guizhou

Guizhou Research and Designing Institute of Environmental Science

The institute is under the direction of the Guizhou Environmental Protection Bureau and the Ministry of Environment. It has already done significant CP projects leading to energy and material savings in various industrial enterprises. The institute is funded by Government funds from provincial MoST, private funds for consulting projects and private contracts.

Main activities:

  • Technical support to provincial government and EPB
  • Service to enterprises/companies (research, engineering consulting)
  • Environmental Protection Design
  • Cleaner Production (audit, technology research and development, promotion)

Achievements in the project CPSUC:

  • Selection of two pilot companies
  • Visits of the two companies
  • Generation of options for Cleaner Production

Gold Refining
The site, which is a 4.5 hour drive from the CP centre is dispersed over a large area. As well as the actual extraction and refining, the mining also occurs at this site. The company has 700 employees which work 330 days annually. The company produce 3 tones of gold each year.

Improvement Options:

  • Dust Control – the dust has a particular effect on worker’s health
  • Electricity
  • Steam – improve quality of pipes
  • Water

Fertiliser Production
This company is one of the largest producers of CaHPO4 and Ca(H2PO4)2 in Asia with 35% of their total products exported in 2008 (aim to increase this to 45% this year). There product output is split equally between both products and the annual capacity of the site is 200,000 tonnes. In 2003/4 the company began cooperating with other businesses and a form of CP was started. Since then it has become an integral part of how the company runs. ISO 9001, 14001, 18000 as well as HACCP and FAM1QS are established and a strong corporate social policy exists. The company provides support to the local village and contributes to the local education of poorer children.

Improvement Options:

  • Waste - There are a number of process wastes that are of concern to the company. The main one is CaSO4.H2O which is currently stored in large silos.
  • Improvement of internal infrastructure – mainly upgrading buildings and machines
